Public Works Department

Public Works & Recycling

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of all local roads, parks, right-of-ways, and water lines. The Borough of Prospect Park has approximately 21 miles of roads. The department provides curbside collection of garbage and recyclables. Also, there is a drive-thru Recycling Center located at the address below, go to the Recycling Collection Schedule for the Recycling Center Hours.

Finance Department

Finance Department

The Finance Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The Finance Department is responsible for all financial transactions relating to both the revenues and disbursements of the Borough. This office is responsible for depositing all funds in depositories authorized by the Mayor & Council. These funds are invested safely and deposited in interest bearing accounts in accordance with State requirements. This Department is also responsible for securing funds for the local schools, high school and the County of Passaic.

The Finance Office oversees the following functions of the Borough: budget, investments, requisitions, bills, cash receipts, disbursements and purchasing. The Finance office oversees purchasing for all departments. Most purchases are covered by bid proposals, contracts or joint purchasing programs.  Payroll is also administered in this office for all municipal employees.

Tax Collection

In accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.A. 54:4-64, the first half taxes of any year are on the basis of half the taxes of the preceding year.

 

The Collector of Taxes is responsible for the billing and collection of taxes only.

WHEN OWNERSHIP OF THE PROPERTY CHANGES, THE TAX BILL IS TO BE FORWARDED TO THE NEW OWNER(S) OR THEIR PAYING AGENT.

 

Tax payments due dates:

 

Quarterly payments become due on August 1st, November 1st, February 1st and May 1st.

 

NO CASH ACCEPTED, Only credit cards or checks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Interest:

 

Any delinquency is subject to interest at the rate of 8% per annum on the first $ 1,500.00 and 18% per annum for any amount over $ 1,500.00 retroactive to the first of the month.

A year end penalty of 6% will be charged for any delinquency in excess of $ 10,000.00.

Real Estate Taxes can be advertised for sale after November 11th of the current year.

 

Receipts:

 

Remittances requiring receipt must be accompanied by the entire tax bill with a self addressed stamped envelope. Otherwise detach the appropriate stub and mail with your check – the cancelled check will be your receipt.

The Tax Assessor is available to the general public on Wednesdays between 9:00AM and 12:00PM by appointment.  The Assessor may be contacted by calling (973) 835-5331 (leave a message on the answering machine with a telephone number that you can be reached.)

 

This office has applications for senior citizen deductions, veteran’s deductions and disabled persons deductions.  Requirements for deductions are printed on the application.  The assessor is willing to mail one to the homeowners.

 

Copies of permits are sent to the Assessor and those affecting value are inspected for added value.  If you are not at home at time of inspection, a notice will be left for you to call for appointment.

Fire Department

Prospect Park Volunteer Fire Department

 

 

The Prospect Park Fire Department’s primary function is to protect the people and their property in times of emergency.

The Prospect Park Fire Department is trained and ready for fire, rescue and other emergency situations.

The Fire Department is ready at any time, at any moment’s notice.

 

The Volunteer Fire Department (Emergencies dial 911) consists of two fire companies with a total of 40 volunteers between them.  Hose Company # 1 has 1 Quint and a Rescue truck.  Fire Company # 1 has one pumper truck.  All approved local firefighters received training at the Passaic County Fire Academy and are kept updated on current trainings, procedures and regulatory requirements.
